Robot Bastard!

Sometimes something immensely cool passes you by.  Years later you discover it and you feel like you're the last one to know, and you wonder how you missed it.  Robot Bastard! is like that, but I'm going to review it anyway.  If you haven't seen it—and I know there are others of you out there that are as uncool as I am—now is your chance.

Robot Bastard is a short film by Rob Schrab, who has gone on to do things you probably have heard of even if you missed this.  Most recently he worked on the film Monster House and has been writing for the Sarah Silverman show.  That probably won't prepare you for the insanity of Robot Bastard! though.

Robot Bastard is a secret agent in some sort of crazy futuristic retro universe.  The designs of this film are unique, and you should really check out the entertaining trailers to get a feel for them. While the sets and costumes are undeniably low-budget, they have a great style that goes well with the goofy over the top theme.

The heroic Robot looks like some kind of crazy thing assembled from a giant Erector Set and Playdough, but he's strangely cool.  He fights like he's a robotic Chow Yun-Fat, dual guns blazing away.  The villains are suitably cheesy and do a good job of dying.  There's even some amusing gore.

Will Robot Bastard save the President's daughter?  Can he blow off some heads along the way?  Is he too old for this shit?  Are we sure this wasn't made in Japan?  If you like weird, goofy sci-fi stuff and haven't seen this I highly recommend checking it out.  You can grab a copy for free off Rob Schrab's website. What have you got to lose?

Four Stars for Robot Bastard!

Dude. I absolutely love Robot Bastard. I was a pretty big fan of Schrab's comic Scud, The Disposable Assassin, so I watched everything he did pretty closely. I've been preaching the greateness of this short for the longest time. I love it! I wish the guy would get back to this sort of thing instead of writing comedy. A Robot Bastard feature could be so cool and easily produced.

I sort of imagine it being like some Super Sentai shit.
