Mechenosets (The Sword Bearer)

Mechenosets

What if an otherwise normal boy grew up with the ability to grow a blade from his hand—a blade so sharp that it could cut through almost anything?

Sounds like the setting for a super-hero action movie, but it isn't, exactly. This bleak Russian film treats the subject in a more true to life fashion—the boy has no understanding of how to control this power at first, and kills several people when reacting in self-defense. Alienated and alone, Sasha continues to use violence as a means to an end as an adult.

Sasha becomes involved with a beautiful woman named Katya. Unfortunately she happens to have a jealous ex-boyfriend.  He solves this problem handily enough at first—and with no fatalities—but the ex-boyfriend is a violent thug who won't let things go so easily.  Matters escalate into a full-scale showdown a short time later when the angry thug and his buddy track them down.  This time Sasha resolves the dispute in a savage and final way.

Despite an initial bad reaction to the extreme violence, Katya stays with Sasha even after discovering his secret. Shortly thereafter the couple is forced to run from both the police and some gangsters.

While there is some action, Mechenosets is not an action movie. There aren't a lot of fights, although some of what is shown is fairly brutal and there's definitely some gore.

There isn't even a lot of dialog.  Sasha and Katya have a relationship that is expressed mainly without words, but it's communicated in an effective fashion.  I think dialog would have failed to explain why they bond and stay together; it doesn't seem like something even they fully understand. They're just drawn together.

Slow-paced, moody, and with some very nice cinematography. I also liked the score. I can only imagine this movie appealing to a certain crowd; art-house fans who also like violence, maybe. Check it out if you're in the mood for something different.
