Trapped somewhere between an amateur softcore porno and a bargain bin monster movie, Insecticidal fails miserably on both fronts.
Cami is a nerdy, virginal college student who believes that insects used to rule the earth. For some reason known only to herself, she's been attempting to create giant intelligent insects. You can tell she's got this science thing nailed because one of her experiments is a scorpion. Scorpions are not insects.
That's really the least of the problems with Insecticidal. The softcore sex bits are excruciating to watch, and the presence of a few bare breasts doesn't help much. The acting is amazingly bad; there are parts where the actors flub their lines and just soldier on without doing another take.
Worst of all are the "insects". These animated creatures would have looked cheap and out of place in a bad video game 10 or 15 years ago. Seeing them in a movie is just painful. Instead of being terrifying they'll probably make you laugh... at least the first time you see them. Unfortunately you get to see them a lot, and even the novelty of how rubbish they are wears off, leaving you sad and empty.
Even the Sci-Fi channel would be ashamed of this film.
